Coppersmith Barbet

A beautiful Coppersmith Barbet, Megalaima haemacephala, returning to its nest hole to feed its young.

It is a resident near passerine bird of Singapore, where it is the most common barbet species. The name barbet refers to the bristles or barbs fringing its heavy bill.

At 17cm in length,it is just slightly bigger than a House Sparrow.More often heard than seen, it makes a characteristic metallic tuk...tuk...tuk, reminiscent of a copper sheet being beaten, hence giving rise to its name.

This photo was taken with D200,500mm F4,1.7x teleconverter,SB800 fill-flash,Gitzo 1325,Markins Q20.
